GENERAL OVERVIEW

The Department of Art realizes the value of individualized instruction. As art faculty members each of us is committed to the development of all students' full potentials. Our mission is to provide an educational context within which students can pursue knowledge and skills in a number of art fields. Each student is introduced to a broad range of aesthetic and stylistic positions through the study of art studio, art history and art education. We are all active exhibiting artists and research scholars in our respective art fields.

Our goal is to provide students the knowledge and practical skills necessary for success as working artists and professional art educators. We strive to establish an environment conducive to artistic growth, acting as catalysts in the development of sensitive, aware individuals who can respond intelligently and creatively to a rapidly changing world.

We specialize in the preparation of visual artists and teachers by strongly emphasizing a design, drawing and art history core. While our art studio emphases include ceramics, commercial art, painting, and jewelry design, we provide for study in photography, sculpture, crafts, and printmaking as well. We also provide both students and the community an extensive slate of contemporary art exhibitions and artists' lectures, including studio visits.

The Department of Art is housed in Porter Hall, which is comprised of three levels of art studios and classrooms. The Pittsburg State University Art Gallery, the Harry Krug Art Gallery, and the Art Students' Gallery are also within Porter Hall. This complex of studios, galleries, and classrooms affords students an environment for significant artistic learning opportunities.
