Steven A Ramsey is a narrative artist whose body of work includes drawing, paintings and computer generated imagery. His work has been shown nationally and internationally in prestigious venues and institutions including 3D World magazine, SIGGRAPH and MacWorld Expo.
Steven grew up in Houston Texas, attended the High School for Performing and Visual Arts and then studied photography and printmaking at the University of Houston for two years. He transfered and earned his BFA at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, and continued his graduate studies at Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois, where he earned his MFA.
After graduate school Steven first found employment in the licensed properties industry as an illustrator and was introduced to digital imaging technologies. Over the next fifteen years he developed his digital skills as artist and art director, building a successful freelance business with a client list that included such corporate properties as Harley-Davidson, Anheuiser Busch, Miller Brewing, Yahama, and celebrities: Mary Englebreit, Jerry Garcia, and Dennis Rodman. It was during this period that Steven started using 3D computer modeling to explore his personal vision through technology.
Steven uses a Macintosh computer and NewTek Lightwave to create his models, supporting software including Maxon Body Paint, Corel Painter, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop are all used to create image and texture maps or perform compositing. Final digital composites are sent to a film recorder where conventional film negatives are burned and photographs printed. His latest body of work continues his interest in the narrative to engage the viewer through storytelling. His narratives, manifest primarily as staged vignettes and character portraits, reflect his history and influences, distilled through his years of experience as an illustrator and designer.
In 2004 Steven accepted a position as faculty at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he now teaches as professor of foundation studies.
