Reception: October 22 : 12:00-1:00

Jonathan Hils sculpture is influenced by his past experience interacting with the rural mountain culture of northern Georgia, where his uncle, a craftsmen, introduced him to traditions, mindsets and qualities of life that struggle to exist in contemporary society. Rural cultures around the world struggle with how to retain their identity while assimilating into a larger culture increasingly dominated by technology.

Hils interest in depicting references to craft, or the notion of crafting, through processes that speak about repetition, obsession and persistence, become the foundation for creating a contemporary vocabulary of sculptural form. While Hils yearns to understand how place, belonging and identity form people, his belief in elements, materials and structures create unique and unusual sculptures.
