Abstract
Internalization is a stated goal at PSU. The goal of
internationalization at PSU has been significantly advanced since a new
International Business major program was established in the fall 2004with the
first BIE grant. PSU now hopes to further its internationalization efforts
with another BIE grant. The proposed project will have a regional focus on the
targeted strategic areas of Russia and Central Asia, as well as the key
economic powers of the Northeast Asia. The grant enables PSU to provide
high-quality, in-depth international business education programs. It supports
international courses and modules for the College of Business. The grant also
supports faculty development through funding of release time for business
faculty to develop new courses, organize and implement student study-abroad
programs, conduct research, and prepare for and attend international
business-related workshops and conferences. It provides faculty and student
support for short and long-term overseas programs. The grant allows the
creation and operation of an international business outreach center that can
assist area businesses in developing new export markets. The project provides
a series of seminars/workshops, guest lecturers, and makes new international
business resources available for PSU faculty/student as well as the area
communities. Several Student-In-Free-Enterprise (SIFE) international business
programs are developed to promote understanding of international economic
education for K-12 educators and students. Finally, this grant will provide
specific international business programs that include activities focused on
the targeted strategic areas of Russia and Central Asia.
Objectives
The primary goal of this project is to significantly
advance the internationalization of business curriculum at PSU. This goal is
part of a larger endeavor to infuse global perspectives in the overall
curriculum of the university. This goal can be achieve through four major
objectives. The first objective is enhancing the newly developed International
Business Major Degree program to provide high-quality, in-depth international
business education. There will be several programs and projects used for this
purpose: (1) creating new international courses; (2) developing an
International Business Concentration for the MBA Program; (3) developing an
International Business Major; (4) creating new international experiences; and
(5) international-themed semester program. The second objective is
strengthening faculty/student development for internationalization. The
project will support faculty development through: (1) continue support for
existing study abroad program within Northeast Asia; (2) developing new study
abroad program with Russia and Central Asia; (3) supporting faculty
development program; and (4) creation of student professional development
program. The third objective is expanding international business outreach
programs to area businesses. The project will achieve this objective through:
(1) creation of International Economic Development Center; (2) development
of outreach programs for local K-12 educators; (3) development of PSU SIFE
chapter international business programs; and (4) expansion of the existing
Global Business Resource Center. Finally, the fourth objective is developing
specific international business programs in the targeted strategic areas of
Russia and Central Asia. This objective responds to the recent development of
international programs and exchanges at PSU with a regional focus on Russia
and Central Asia. This objective can be achieved through: (1) supporting
Russian language courses offering in PSU; (2) developing sister school
relationship with institutions in Central Asia as well as Russia; (3)
supporting study abroad trips to Russia and Central Asia; (4) providing
seminars/workshops regarding Russia and Central Asia; and (5) SIFE
international project with Russia and Central Asia.
Adjustments
One major adjustment has been made in this first year.
Two of our BIE Program faculty members, Dr. Joell Nisolle and Phil Halstend,
left Pittsburg State University at the end of the fall semester. This
caused some difference between the original budget and the actual spending for
personnel. The difference of $2,505 is going to be reallocated to “Travel” to
support more BIE study abroad trips. The reason is that BIE Program will send
three different study-abroad teams this year; those teams are going to Russia,
Kazakhstan, and Korea. The U.S. Department of Education has already given PSU
its approval of this adjustment.
Director’s Assessment
All four objectives have been
significantly advanced in the first year through the used of BIE Grant.
Virtually all proposed activities have been finished or are under way as
planned in the original application of the grant. First, the progress in the
first objective is evidenced by the successful development of IB Minor degree
program and the submission of the proposal of International Business
Concentration. Supporting faculty/student development for internationalization
has been accomplished through funding the faculty participations in CIBER
workshop, international conferences participations, faculty/student study
abroad trips, and faculty travel for research. Business Outreach Program has
been supported through seminars/workshops for the area businesses. In
addition, Global Business Resource Center has been expended by acquiring
more learning resources and materials. Finally, the fourth objective has been
accomplished through the establishment of sister schools in Russia as well as
Central Asia. Also, a PSU SIFE team has visited Russia in March 2005 to
conduct several international projects. As a result, the PSU SIFE chapter won
the regional championship in SIFE competition and advanced to the SIFE
national competition. It is important to note that this BIE Grant Program not
only benefited the Kelce but also had several other benefiting groups of
stakeholders, including the university itself and the surrounding business
community in southeastern Kansas and the four-state region. All
accomplishments achieved so far would not have happen without this grant.
Therefore, we feel that not only has the BIE Project progresses substantially
towards its goals, it has, in most cases, exceeded them.
The IB Minor Degree Program, as part of the first
objective, was approved by PSU curriculum committees, and the university
faculty senate through the period of Sep 2004-Feb2005. This minor degree
program will begin on August 2005 at the start of 2005 Fall. The proposal of
International Business Concentration in the MBA Program has been submitted for
approval. This new concentration is expected to grow in number of students and
in elective courses as the momentum increases for this new program. The second
objective, supporting faculty/student development, has been accomplished
through funding for CIBER/ASDP workshops, international conference
participations, study abroad trips, and research travels. The third objective
has been accomplished through seminars/workshops for the area businesses and
an outreach program to area teachers for business/economic education programs
in their schools.
Next Project Year
The proposed activities in the original application for
the grant will be conducted as planned in the second year of the project. The
proposed MBA program of International Business Concentration will be forwarded
to the Kelce MBA curriculum committee for final approval. The new course
development is on its way for the IB Minor Program and MBA International
Business Concentration. The BIE Grant will continuously support study abroad
programs with Northeast Asia, Russia, and Central Asia. The BIE Grant will
support the establishment of local chapter of the Association of International
Business Students (AIBS). The BIE Grant will continuously support the Economic
Education Program for K-12 educators. The BIE Grant Project also has a plan to
increase the number of materials in the Global Business Resource Center, so
that it can be a useful resource for Pittsburg Business Community. We also
plan on having more seminars or presentations or workshops. The BIE will keep
supporting faculty/students for their participations in professional
conferences, CIBER workshop, internship programs, and study abroad programs.
The BIE will invite scholars/business people from Central Asia to have
presentations/seminars about their countries. We will keep supporting the PSU
SIFE’s international programs focusing on Russia and Central Asia.
