The teaching of the social studies with respect to objectives, methods, materials, and content using major constructs of the social science disciplines. The course is designed to cover the organization of early childhood programs and the administrative requirements for maintaining ongoing programs. Topics include assessing community needs, licensing and certification requirements, budgets, food services, physical facilities, staffing, parent involvement, and other administrative considerations. Will deal with the need and justification for reading instruction at the middle and secondary levels; understanding the process of reading to understand and the reading demands of subject matter classrooms; textbook evaluation, informal and formal evaluation of the reading/study skills; accommodating individual differences; and types of reading programs at middle/secondary levels.

CURIN 820. Secondary School Reading Programs. 3 hours. Prepares individuals assigned to teach reading at the middle/secondary levels to meet the reading needs of students in a developmental and/or remedial setting. Will deal with the rule/need or reading instruction at the secondary level; characteristics of secondary disabled reader; nature and causes of reading difficulty; diagnosis and
remediation of reading disabled readers at the middle/senior high levels; the reading skills and how to teach them: reading the appreciation; survival skills; and the organization and management of secondary reading programs.
CURIN 831. Elementary School Mathematics. 3 hours. Designed to assist K-8 teachers to analyze and synthesize issues in mathematics instruction. Methods and techniques will be presented which will broaden and renew mathematics knowledge base.
CURIN 832. Elementary School Science. 3 hours. Designed to assist K-8 teachers to analyze and synthesize contemporary issues in science education. Hands-on activities will be utilized to assist the teacher in implementing the science knowledge base.
CURIN 833. Problems in the Teaching of Reading. 3 hours. An advanced survey of the fundamental principles and practices of teaching developmental reading in the elementary school.
CURIN 834. Advanced Children's and Adolescent Literature. 3 hours. An intensive study of literature and its utilization with children and adolescents in classroom settings. A variety of genre, both traditional and current, will be read and explored with an emphasis placed on instructional uses.

CURIN 841. The Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties. 3 hours. An in-depth study of the elements necessary for the diagnosis of reading difficulties in a remedial setting and in the classroom. Each student is responsible for the development of a diagnosis using a school child. Prerequisite: CURIN 833 Problems in the Teaching of Reading or permission of instructor.
CURIN 842. Practicum in the Remediation of Reading Difficulties. 3 hours. A supervised experience in Remediating individuals or groups of school children requiring corrective or remedial reading instruction. This is final reading course in sequence of four courses. See coursework required for Master's in Reading (Certification Emphasis) for additional information. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
CURIN 843. Trends and Issues. 3 hours. Exploration of the concept of school reform through an examination of the critical issues facing the American school and the promising practices found in restructuring the educational system.
CURIN 844. Methods and Materials in Remedial Reading. 3 hours. An introduction to remedial reading: principles, methods, strategies, and materials with a contrast/comparison made to developmental and corrective reading. Emphasis will be placed on correct use of specific methods and materials and on proper selection of a method or materials for use with a particular child. Information is supplied through lecture, demonstration, discussion, reading assignments, independent reading-study, and case study analyses. Appropriate for both elementary and secondary teachers. Prerequisite or corequisite: CURIN 841 The Diagnosis of Reading Difficulties.
CURIN 845. Teaching Writing K-8. 3 hours. Foundations of teaching writing in a kindergarten through eighth grade classroom using both direct instruction and process writing models. Students are expected to practice instructional strategies in classrooms and report on their findings.
CURIN 846. Individualized Reading Instruction. 1-3 hours. A rationale for and a study of the individualized approach to reading instruction: organization of the classroom, teacher and student roles, selection and use of materials, record keeping and evaluation.
CURIN 847. Structural Linguistic Approach to Reading. 1-3 hours. Theories underlying the structural linguistic approach to reading will be studied. Materials appropriate for implementing the approach will be reviewed and made. Techniques will be practiced.
CURIN 848. Advanced Language Arts. 3 hours. An in-depth study of language acquisition, production, and utilization. The focus of the course will deal specifically with how to integrate the language arts into the total school curriculum. Classroom application of current methodology, materials, and research findings will be emphasized.
CURIN 850. Current Teaching Practices. 3 hours. The evolution of research on effective teaching in terms of methodologies and perspectives. Examination of current day classroom practices and how to transfer research in the area of teacher effectiveness into practice.

A supervised experience (a minimum of 100 clock hours in an early childhood educational setting under the direction of university personnel and a cooperating teacher who is certified in Early Childhood Education. Specifically designed to facilitate and expand upon the student's ability to be an effective early childhood educator. Emphasis is placed upon providing field experiences in types of early childhood settings in which the student has had limited previous experiences.
