| The CARRD provides assessment and screening of individuals who are experiencing difficulties with reading. The assessment identifies the strengths and weaknesses that the individual possesses with regard to reading and skills prerequisite to reading and comprehension. The intervention program is developed based on the assessment and assists the individual to become a competent reader. The intervention is presented on a one-on-one basis between the individual and the paraprofessional trainer. The CARRD offers two programs, the Identification and Intervention Program (IIP), and the After School &Summer Program (ASSP). The IIP takes place in the student's school, and is primarily a prevention program for first-grade children. Each student is assessed at the beginning of first grade. Students who are identified as "at risk" are given the opportunity to receive the training program. Individuals of any age can take part in the ASSP, which is presented after schools hours Monday through Thursday, and in the summer. |

The Older Adult Screening and Intervention Services (OASIS) provides screening for memory and other thinking changes commonly found in people with dementia, like Alzheimer's Disease. Following a telephone interview and screening appointment, a written report about changes in memory and other thinking abilities will be sent to participants' physicians for follow-up care. Early screening of symptoms may help physicians make a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and related conditions and begin medical treatment.
Goals of OASIS also include educating participant and family members about available medical treatments, and helping identify community resources that will enhance the quality of life of people with dementia and their caregivers. Early screening and intervention is critical and helps people with dementia and their family members make decisions about medical concerns, legal issues, finances, driving, and home safety. |

| The Learning Center provides support services to bright, highly motivated students with Learning Disabilities or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders who realize they can succeed with hard work and the appropriate supervision.
Students are welcome to explore the possibilities of their education potential at Pittsburg State University.
Pittsburg State University has a commitment to provide appropriate educational services to all students. We work hard to meet the needs of all students with identified learning disabilities or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders.
Our purpose is to assist identified students at PSU in understanding and preparing assignments, as well as understanding and completing tests. We do provide a minimum amount of tutoring; however we anticipate that those services can be provided by the respective departments because our expertise is limited in the specific content areas. The key to our services is assistance. We do not provide content, information, or answers that do not reflect the knowledge obtained by the student.
The specific type of service is determined on an individual basis. We attempt to match the student with the appropriate service. The following is a list of some of the services provided by The Learning Center at PSU:
1. Provide testing modifications such as:
- Provide extended time periods for test taking.
- Read multiple choice and true-false tests verbatim.
- Read and explain what is being asked on short answer or essay tests.
- Read and define words on a test (if appropriate, depending on nature of the test).
- Write or type responses provided by the student on short answer or essay tests.
2. Provide assistance to students in understanding and completing assignments.
- Read and explain the assignment to the student.
- Help the student understand his/her class notes.
- Write or type responses provided by the student.
3. Provide study skill strategies.
4. Direct students to appropriate university support services.
To qualify for the services at The Learning Center:
1. Apply for admission to Pittsburg State University.
2. Visit the campus. Request to visit with an assistant in The Learning Center during your visit.
3. Send of copy of your most recent Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 plan, or documentation from your school or doctor stating the nature of your learning disability or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
4. Once on campus, contact The Learning Center for an appointment. |
