The Master of Arts Degree in English with an Emphasis in Literature is designed for students who enjoy the challenge of analyzing great works of British, American, and international authors, of engaging with the ideas and themes found in the best that has been thought and said, and of tracing the grand arcs of literary history. This graduate level English degree can be earned by achieving one of three options.

Our program is designed to further develop students’ research and critical thinking skills. Writing techniques and spoken communication skills will be honed through coursework in research methods, theory, and literature. The majority of classes focus on literature, including major authors and time periods, genres, themes, and special topics in global literature.
Graduate teaching assistantships are available to qualified students on a competitive basis. To be considered for an assistantship, please read the instructions under Application for Graduate Teaching Assistantships.
Students selecting this emphasis may be preparing for doctoral studies in English or for professional degree programs in business or law. High school teachers, on the other hand, may select this emphasis to update their teaching credentials and to qualify them to teach dual credit courses at the high school level.

About English and Modern Languages Department
The Department of English and Modern Languages offers baccalaureate degrees and a master’s degree program. Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) programs are offered in English and in Modern Languages. A master’s program is also offered in English. The department offers minors in English, English Teaching, Creative Writing, French, Professional Writing, and Spanish.
