Overview
The Master of Science in Mathematics degree provides for advanced study in mathematics. The program prepares students to teach at the community college level, a career in mathematics, or an advanced degree in mathematics.
Pitt State also offers an 18-hour Graduate Certificate in Mathematics. The 18-hour Graduate Certificate in Mathematics is designed to certify that the recipients have a knowledge base in graduate mathematics requisite in a variety of areas, including collegiate level teaching.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics at Pittsburg State offers small class sizes and programs that are adaptable to students’ needs and interests. The department fosters unique opportunities for student involvement by encouraging student participation in the Math Club/Mathematical Association of America Student Chapter, Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, Actuarial Club, Mo-Kan Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. In addition, the department hosts a problem-solving group and provides opportunities for one-on-one research with faculty members.
The faculty members within the department have expertise in a broad area of mathematics to support research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
At the graduate level, the department offers graduate teaching assistantships. This opportunity allows graduate students to develop as college-level instructors while receiving mentoring support within the department.
Graduates of our mathematics program are fully prepared and ready to pursue graduate school or careers in mathematics. We boast nearly 100% job placement, and our graduates are exceptionally successful in graduate school.
The department encourages student research at all levels by providing one-on-one research opportunities with faculty members and providing travel support for students to attend and present research at a variety of mathematics conferences.
In addition, graduate students are expected to conduct independent research as a requirement for the Master of Science degree.
