Overview


The Department of Music offers a Bachelor of Music degree with an emphasis in Music Performance. Students who select voice as their primary applied area benefit from in-depth study with distinguished faculty members, as well as in theatrical training in opera workshop. Master classes and visits from professional performing artists further enhance our curriculum.

Undergraduate vocal performance students are afforded the opportunity to develop both as high-level performers and emerging pedagogues in this field. They have many opportunities to perform as soloists, in chamber choirs, large ensembles, and in opera and musical theater productions.

The exceptional voice area faculty at Pittsburg State University are dedicated to the development of their craft. As teachers, they are continuously involved in research to stay current with pedagogical development. Additionally, the voice faculty are active performers both regionally and nationally, appearing with critically ensembles and companies.

The facilities at Pittsburg State University consist of superb performance venues, including the critically-acclaimed Bicknell Family Center for the Arts and the Sharon Kay Dean Recital Hall. Students have access to excellent instrumental resources across the university, including professional-level percussion instruments, outstanding grand pianos, harpsichords, and the Fisk Opus 106 organ.

This degree serves singers whose future career paths may lead to collegiate-level teaching, private studio instruction, membership in professional ensembles, or other areas of solo or collaborative performance.

Pittsburg State University is an accredited member of NASM, the National Association of Schools of Music.

Our department averages 100 music majors and 40 minors, and 200 non-music majors per semester, and is staffed by 13 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members.
