Overview
The Pittsburg State University Master of Science in Teaching with an emphasis in Secondary Education program focuses on preparing licensed middle and secondary school teachers to move from novice teachers to master teachers. This program is also open to those who do not have a teaching license but want to learn about pedagogy and teaching middle and high school students. This program does not lead to a Kansas teaching license.

The Master of Science in Teaching with an emphasis in Secondary Education program requires 33 graduate credit hours. Students take seven required courses, three electives, and a practicum. The three elective courses come from curriculum, assessment, or a content area. Students take all of the courses online.
In the Master of Science in Teaching Secondary Education, students take three electives (nine graduate credit hours) in a content area in addition to nine graduate credit hours in a content area. All 18 graduate credit hours must be in the same content area. This qualifies students to teach dual credit courses.
Options available for the degree include:
Option I: Thesis
This option is designed to prepare students for a doctoral program, for advanced professional careers, or for students wanting to complete an in-depth research experience.
Option III: Coursework
This option requires completion of coursework that demonstrates evidence of advanced coursework in an area of concentration. Departments will require evidence of competency through activities such as research papers, portfolios, practice, internships, comprehensive exams, or other individual work. Students should check with their major department for specific requirements for the coursework.
