Overview
Earn your Bachelor of Science in Social Work at Pittsburg State University.
Do you want to help individuals and families who are going through crisis? Through the social work program at PSU, advocate for social and economic justice.
Classroom projects include honing your interviewing skills and simulated scenarios.
Enhance the lives of our community members.
Social work students complete 3-week training rotations serving:- children, adults, and families
- the economically disadvantaged
- people with intellectual disabilities
- older adults in a long-term care facility
Address a social issue or unmet need in a semester-long, community service project. Many students choose to raise funds or collect donations for charitable organizations, while others may organize events or campaigns to advocate for policy change or civic engagement.
Train under professionals.
Our students fulfill 50-150 hours of internship experience in a social work setting.
Students also complete a 480-hour practicum in their final semester, practicing bachelor-level social work under supervision in a social service agency.
Social workers find jobs in many settings like:

All states require licensure at some level for social workers. Kansas licenses social workers at three levels: LBSW, LMSW, and LSCSW.
In Kansas, you must have a degree in social work from an accredited program to be a social worker. The PSU program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Advanced standing students add 1 academic year to their student journey and earn their master's degree in Social Work on the PSU campus.
The KU Master's program prepares students for clinical social work practice. Graduates find jobs in the followings settings:
- Mental health centers
- Hospitals
- Schools
- Hospice
- Addiction treatment
- Veterans affairs
Social Work PLUS is an club exclusive to social work students. This group is a great place to bounce ideas off of for community service projects and internship advice.
Student 2 Student is a mentor group for social work students that pairs veteran students with students new to the program.
Natural Ties facilitates friendships among college students and adults with intellectual disabilities from the community.

Pittsburg State University’s School of History, Philosophy, and Social Sciences consists of those specialties that have emerged as so desirable in the 21st century labor force. Students use the tools from Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Sociology and Social Work programs and coursework to examine issues and to find sustainable solutions to complex problems affecting individuals, families, and society.
