Overview
Earn your Applied Science degree in Electrical Technology at Pittsburg State University.
The Electrical Technology Program is a 2-year “hands-on” technical program. Graduates are prepared to become certified electricians by attaining Journeyman Electrical Certification.
The Pittsburg State University Electrical Technology program provides students in-depth training for each of the three broad areas of the electrical industry, including:
- Residential Electrical Wiring
- Commercial Electrical Construction
- Industrial Electrical Construction and Maintenance
Unique topics covered in the Electrical Technology program:
- Wiring a residential single-family home
- Installation of large switchgear, conduits, wiring and data systems in a multi-million dollar commercial building
- System installation, analysis, design, and troubleshooting of an industrial automated control system with Programmable Logic Controllers
- Variable Frequency Drives and robotics
Electrical Technology graduates are recruited by employers to become:
- Residential, Commercial or Industrial Electricians
- Maintenance Electricians
- Electrical/Electronic Technicians
- Utility Linemans
- Electrical Designers (Engineering)
The typical starting salary for the immediate area is $16.00-25.00 per hour. Salaries are significantly higher in larger metropolitan areas like Kansas City, MO, Wichita, KS, and Tulsa, OK.

Student Outcomes
The Electrical Technology program is committed to quality and in order to be successful creating graduates from the program, the following are a set of Student Outcomes.
The Electrical Technology program puts a heavy emphasis on being a “hands-on” learning experience. Students will be taught how to safely and properly use common electrical measuring instruments, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment within the electrical trades.
After completion of the Electrical Technology program, students will:
- Be prepared to work proficiently within the residential, commercial, and industrial electrical industry.
- Be knowledgeable and able to apply the current National Electric Code requirements residential, commercial, and industrial installations.
- Be prepared to work with control and automation systems.
- Be prepared to take the certified journeyman electrician exam.
The Pittsburg State University Electrical Technology program is a very unique program that allows students to gain knowledge and experience in a wide variety of industries that hire electricians. Graduates will learn many skills which make them valuable to a wide variety of employers, giving them an edge in being able to pick the career path that best suits their interests.
