Overview
Pittsburg State University’s Inclusive Education minor is designed to prepare teacher candidates to meet the needs of students with exceptionalities in the general education classroom. Additionally, this minor serves to prepare teacher candidates for the Master of Science in Special Education High/Low Incidence program. This minor is open to both education and non-education majors who plan to work in careers involving students with exceptionalities. This minor does not lead to a teaching license or endorsement on a teaching license.

The Inclusive Education minor consists of six undergraduate courses designed to guide teacher candidates to become professional educators who are proficient in teaching students with exceptionalities in the general education classroom. As students complete the coursework for this minor, they develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully collaborate with professionals, implement inclusive practices, and instruct students with diverse learning needs.
The course content within this minor includes theory and research related to the following topics:
- Inclusion
- Professional collaboration
- Individuals with Disability Education Act (IDEA)
- Implementation of instructional strategies
- Multi-tiered systems of support
- Clinical experiences
Special Education teaching is identified nationally and in Kansas as a high need field. As a graduate with this minor, you will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and strategies you need in order to achieve the following, and more:
- Teach in a general education classroom for grades K-6 or content area (grades 6-12) (with teaching license)
- Pursue a master's degree in special education (with teaching license)
- Work with students with disabilities outside of a school setting

The department offers Alternative Teaching Licensure programs in Special Education and Secondary Education. Certificates that lead to an endorsement to a teaching license in a variety of educational areas are available.
